Cheating Death

Humans have been trying to cheat death right from their beginning. Have they succeeded. I should say "somewhat". well, we have invented organ replacement, which was unthinkable a hundred years ago. So, a person who had some kind of problem would certainly have died at that time. But, now we are able to replace the organ and are on our way in making artificial ones too. In that way, we really cheated death. At least we were able to stop death and postpone it , right? But, as always, there is an argument other way around also. By, inventing lot of medicines and all, the health rate never actually grow up, but we invented new diseases also. By, inventing new ways of transportation, war, entertainment we actually inventing new ways to death as a byproduct. But, we cannot simply discard the concept of cheating death. What we thought impossible, 1000 years ago, is possible now. Who knows?, after a 1000 years, if we survive, man kind will be able to cheat death and actually stop death. So, whatya think?

  1. Hmm, you are right that the new inventions always bring a problem and then there will be another invention to stop that problem and it goes on.
As you said, we may be postponing death with the medicine. But it doesn't exactly mean that we are cheating death. Well, its like one of those protections we take from being attacked by something..in this case a disease. It is of no difference from when one tries to protect himself from getting bitten by a snake :) lol, a snake example here...oo!
There are life support machines used in hospitals to artificially prolong the life of someone with body systems functioning insufficiently. This is one of the most ethical issues atm.
But if you think it is ethical imperative to stick to the ordinary means, then no one would take any kind of medicine to cure something.
I think this topic (my comment) is sort of drifting away...Ah well, I think we can argue both ways.
Good topic by the way :)

  7. Good post Aneesh. Made me think alot.

**In that way, we really cheated death. At least we were able to stop death and postpone it , right?

Im not sure if thats really CHEATING/POST-PONING Death. Cos thats Advance Medical Science, which helps in health improvements...not necessarily cheating death.

Cos Death comes in many ways, not only thru health issues...death also comes via accidents etc.

Death somehow comes no matter what and when it does come around, can u stop it? If u can, then thats what I'd call Cheating Death.

And I agree...in one way, we may be proloning our life-spans but in another way we r destroying ourselves. The world has gone crazy, yes.

**if we survive, man kind will be able to cheat death and actually stop death. So, whatya think?

I dun want that to happen...cos who wants to live forever? if we all start living forever, we'd not appreciate wut we hv in this short span of LIFE. And then it'll also be an Artifical Life. And imagine how CROWDED this Earth wud be then!

So I really dun want that to happen. But thats just my opinion.

  8. well its always said, death is the truth of life..!! believe me all of us fear death..we may not express it,but thats the truth..who will think of death when we have the best thing in world with us,thats "LIFE"

  9. May be. But I think death is that reality which would never become an illusion. It is a rule of nature, so be it! May be we can postpone it(are we actually?), but stopping it completely, don't think so. :)

  11. saranya,

WOW! Thanks for such a long comment. Snake example? LOL
Well, prolonging death... doesn't that mean at least for a few days we actually controlled death? and in that way cheated it?
Yah, you r a medico and you know the ethics...
    Thanks once again!!

  12. pj,

***ppl r getting into this "adhyatm" in gr8 numbers..

There are always people interested in that. 'N there are people who always try to find the truth based on logical conclusions, I mean, scientists... These groups have been here till the birth of human race.
I don't think that'll stop people from inventing new things...

At this point of time, YES.

  18. keshi,

I am honored that your brain was racked 'coz of me :)

Well, isn't health improvement meant to postpone death?
If you didn't take medicine you will die, so, we take medicine and thus postpone death...right?

***Cos Death comes in many ways, not only thru health issues...death also comes via accidents etc.

Yah, I agree with that. A person admitted in hospital 'coz of an accident may survive, but will he survive if he was left there at the accident spot?

***Death somehow comes no matter what and when it does come around, can u stop it?

I too think like that, but that concept is at this point only. In the future, we may think different. Theories and concepts are to change and will change. That's what history taught us.

It is right that stopping death will bring its consequence, but as always, human are trying to stop death for a long time and will continue to do..
If ever, they succeed they might think of something else like moving on to a new planet?

I guess, yours is the longest comment 'N Thanks for putting your time
    :)

Yah, it's one of those questions which don't have a definite answer, can go both ways and can argue till we tire.

  21. ria,

As of now, we cannot even imagine of stopping death 'coz that's what we learned from childhood.. The future is inviting us with the most unexpected things...

**If you didn't take medicine you will die, so, we take medicine and thus postpone death

I agree we take medicine to PREVENT death...but its not post-poning death. There's a huge difference. If we cud post-pone death, we should be able to tell Death to go away even after taking the meds and its time for us to die. Do u get wut Im saying? :)

  23. ***I agree we take medicine to PREVENT death...but its not post-poning death.

Well, I say it is. Prevention is one way of postponing isn't it?. When we have a slight temperature, we take pills to prevent fever. That only postpones it, right? If we didn't take medical help in an accident, we will die that moment, right? If we take, we won't. So, in effect, aren't we actually postponing it?

***There's a huge difference. If we cud post-pone death, we should be able to tell Death to go away even after taking the meds and its time for us to die. Do u get wut Im saying?

Yah, I got it, but 'coz of medicine we are alive, sometimes. If medicine is not there, we should have died. In such case, I think we are postponing death

    :)

  24. Do you mean postponing death for some time or cheating it forever? If death comes 'pre-maturely' i think i wud like to cheat for some extra time but if you mean living forever...err that sounds like a bad idea to me. There wouldn't be any thrilling in leading life that is never gonna come to an end

  25. its just a way to improve our life style..no one can cheat death:)
