How do you get respect? Just because you are a famous person, or you have a high paying job or you are in a foreign country, do everyone needs to respect you? We all are human beings, right? We do different jobs, that's it. You might be a lawyer, a doctor, an IT specialist, a farmer, a peasant or a student. Who, do you think, deserves more respect? Is it the doctor? No. Is it the peasant? No. Then who? Does respect depend on one's status? No.I have seen people always pestering saying "why can't you respect me? I am the principal" or I am the teacher or I am your friend. Respect is something, which comes from within, don't you agree?.
While I was in college, I never greeted anyone whom I thought doesn't deserve respect. One fine morning, my friends and I were on our way to class and were walking through the veranda of our college
. Our principal was coming right towards us.we just looked at him and went past him to our class. Later, just after our lunch break, he came to our class and talked about respect. He mentioned that "some of you don't know what respect is and you don't know you've to greet your principal. I am the principal, why can't you respect me?".
We were thinking, "what's his problem? why is he telling he is the principal? He don't know he is the principal?". And the greeting thing, well, is it a de-facto standard to say "Good Morning and Good afternoon" when ever you meet a person, whom you respect?.
After this incident, when ever some meetings are there, he'll always mention this incident of disrespect.
Well, we hadn't changed a bit. When ever we saw him, we would tell each other, "see! He is the principal". There was a saying between us which goes like "The watchman deserves more respect than the principal".

lol :) i can be very rude.. :P infact certain teachers are scared of me :P
ReplyDeleteIts the same everywhere, every field... In society people want that...if they dont get it they dont even hesitate to ask for it.. Your principal is the victim of the same genre.
ReplyDeleteyes,respect comes 4m within,dats tru..
ReplyDeletehey I too hav got such advice a lot of times and our Kv princi gosh if he starts he can't stop. At first wen ma frnds used to say tat our princi is boring and all ... I used to feel wat style it is but its really unbearable really and ye I must put a point here tat sum teachers do say coz they want too teach us etiquette but here it doesn't seem so.
ReplyDeleteso its better tat u didn't change but I wud say
u could have given the inna pidicho type of wish. hi hi lolz
cool post!!
respect is earned not demanded...
ReplyDeleteRespect has to come from within, and status has nothing to do with it indeed.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a funny thing, this respect. The students will respect the principal as a principal if the principal respects the students as students :-) Afterall, it is a matter of give respect and take respect!
ReplyDeletea watchman deserves more respect? Why?
ReplyDeleteI think everyone deserves respect! Especially elders! No matter whether it is for a servant or PM. And I guess the reason y students are asked to or would rather say taught/adviced to give respect to teachers and principal who are older than us is to maintain it when we grow up...to respect other people. and i do think ur principal was right that he gave a lecture on it :) -in my opinion.
It is a good attitude to greet others with a smile when u see them first in the morning especially at work places (i dunno whether Iam matured enough to say this to you as im still a student) but I personally think there should be no differentiation made btw anyone as to whether who do/do not deserve respect! Good not to hesitate to greet others whether they greet u back or not.
Again, this is just my opinion :)
heheh...well some people get wat they want by force...and society has become like that dude so really some times they get it by force..but ur prici was a victim ..not good naa..may he wanted something so let him go on his way :P..and ours our way..

saranya,
ReplyDelete***a watchman deserves more respect?
I said "The watchman deserves more respect than the principal". I was referring to the watchman in my college. He was friendly towards us, but a real traitor. So, was the saying :)
Well, saranya, I respect your opinion, but like you said, I too have an opinion and I don't think we need to respect someone just 'coz they are elder than us
LOL, just a conflict of opinions.
I'll come up with a new post on this :)
